Spotify editorial pitch: how to pitch Spotify's editors

Last reviewed 8 min read 6 sources By Senty

The short answer

Pitch Spotify's editors from Spotify for Artists, under Music then Upcoming. It is free, it takes one unreleased song, and you should send it at least 7 days before release. Fill in every field with accurate detail. Pitching does not guarantee a playlist, but a pitch sent 7 days early also puts the song in your followers' Release Radar.

  • The tool is under Music > Upcoming in Spotify for Artists. Only Admin and Editor team members can send a pitch.
  • You pitch one song at a time, and only before it goes live. Compilations and songs where you are only a featured artist are not eligible.
  • Send 14 to 21 days before release when you can. Day 7 is the floor, not the target.
  • There is no paid route in. Spotify's terms forbid services that sell guaranteed placement.

The editorial pitch is the only official route to Spotify's own playlist editors. It lives inside Spotify for Artists, it is free, and every artist with an upcoming release uses the same form. There is no queue to buy into and no agency with a private door. Spotify describes the tool as the way all artists and their teams pitch new music (Spotify for Artists: playlisting).

A pitch is also the only way to choose which song your followers hear first. Send it at least 7 days before release and Spotify adds that exact song to your followers' Release Radar, whether or not an editor picks it up (Spotify: Release Radar). That part is close to a guarantee. The editorial placement is not.

What the editorial pitch is

Spotify's editors build the editorial playlists: New Music Friday, Fresh Finds, RapCaviar, Pollen and hundreds of genre, mood and culture lists. They decide what goes on them, and they use the pitch queue as one input. A pitch puts a song in front of that team; it is not a reservation on a list.

Three rules shape everything else:

  • One song at a time. You can pitch a single song per release, including for an EP or album. When that song goes live, you can pitch another.
  • Unreleased only. Spotify says a song is no longer eligible once it has gone live. There is no retroactive pitch.
  • One shot per song. You can edit the pitch up to release day, but Spotify does not promise the editors will see the change.

Spotify has also begun rolling out video pitching, as a separate form under Video & Visuals. A song pitch and a video pitch are two submissions, so a release with a video can be pitched twice (Spotify for Artists).

Why it is free, and why that matters

Spotify does not charge for the pitch, and no outside service can sell access to it. Anyone who claims to have an editor contact for sale is either selling something else or breaking Spotify's rules. Spotify's third-party policy says services that offer guaranteed placement on playlists for money violate its terms, and the same page bans services that advertise streams for payment (Spotify for Artists).

So the pitch is the cheapest serious step in a release. The cost is your attention. Fill the form properly and the song is in the queue. Skip it and the same release reaches fewer editors, loses the chosen Release Radar track, and leaves the one free editorial lever unused.

How to send the pitch, step by step

  1. Deliver the song early. Send it to your distributor 3 to 4 weeks before release so Spotify has it in time to appear under Upcoming. A release that is not visible yet cannot be pitched.
  2. Claim your artist profile. You need Admin or Editor access on the artist team in Spotify for Artists. Managers and label staff with the right access can pitch too.
  3. Set the release date. Decide the day now. The pitch countdown runs from that date, and moving it later can close the window.
  4. Open Music > Upcoming. Choose the release, then the one song. Complete the pitch form.
  5. Fill every field. Genre, mood, instruments, culture, location and the written story all route the pitch to a different editor or system. More detail gives the song a better chance, in Spotify's own words.
  6. Review what you wrote. Read the pitch as a stranger. If it names no genre, no mood and no reason to listen, rewrite it before you send.
  7. Send it 14 to 21 days out. If the release is close, send it today. Never send after the song goes live.

Our pitch writing templates cover the written field sentence by sentence.

The fields, and what to put in them

The form is short, and each field does a job. Treat the tags as routing and the story as context.

What each field in the Spotify pitch form is for
FieldWhat it doesWhat to put in it
Genre tagsRoutes the pitch to genre editorsUp to three accurate genres. Not the one you wish you were in.
Mood and styleMatches the song to mood playlistsTwo or three tags that fit the record as it is.
InstrumentsHelps editors sort by soundThe main two or three instruments or production features.
Culture and languageRoutes the pitch to local and cultural teamsScene, language and community if the song belongs to one.
LocationLets local editors find youHometown and where you are based now.
Written pitchThe one human part of the formFour or five sentences: sound, story, one proof, plan.

Guides that have measured the written field report a ceiling of about 500 characters (Intonality). That is roughly 80 words. Spend them on facts. Spotify's editors read thousands of pitches a week, so a sentence that could appear in any pitch wastes a character you do not have.

Timing: the 7-day floor

Spotify asks for delivery at least 7 days before release. Below that line, the song misses editorial consideration and the Release Radar pick. The 7-day rule is a floor, not a target.

Artist Advisory works a release calendar back from release day: 21 to 28 days out, deliver the release; 14 days out, confirm it appears in Spotify for Artists; 10 to 14 days out, complete the pitch; 7 days out is the absolute latest (Artist Advisory, 15 April 2026).

Playlist data points the same way. Pitches sent 21 to 28 days ahead show the strongest editorial results, because editors plan weekly and finalise playlists days before Friday (MusicPulse, 21 August 2026). There is a limit to this: a pitch sent six weeks early with no release activity behind it can read as stale. The useful window is roughly 2 to 4 weeks. Inside 7 days, you have lost the editorial part.

After you submit: what happens next

Spotify emails you if the song is picked. You can also open Music > Playlists in Spotify for Artists when the release goes live and see every playlist the song has entered, editorial or not. Two things worth knowing:

  • Editors may choose a different song from the release than the one you pitched. The pitch gives them your preference, not the final say.
  • A pitch that is not picked still has value. The metadata feeds Spotify's recommendation systems, the Release Radar add is real, and a song can be discovered later from its own performance.

If no editorial playlist adds the song on release day, the campaign is not over. Editors watch early data, and a strong save rate in the first week can earn a late add. Keep pushing independent playlists and clean traffic from outside Spotify while the data is fresh. Our release timeline checklist covers what to check in the first 28 days.

Five mistakes that waste the pitch

  1. Pitching after release. The form is gone once the song is live. Plan the release date around the pitch, not the other way round.
  2. Pitching the wrong song. You get one slot. Pick the strongest 20 seconds, not the song that meant most to you.
  3. Leaving fields empty. Empty tags send the song to fewer editors and weaker recommendations. Fill every field, even the small ones.
  4. Writing generic copy. Adjectives like amazing and unique tell an editor nothing. Name the sound, the story and one real signal.
  5. Paying someone to pitch. There is nothing to buy. Anyone charging for a guaranteed editorial add is breaking Spotify's terms and risking your release.

One last number to keep in view: most pitches do not land an editorial playlist, and Spotify says so directly. The pitch is still worth sending every time, because it costs nothing, it shapes the algorithm's view of the song, and it puts the song you chose into Release Radar. Compare that with the paid routes in our service directory before you spend money on promotion.

Questions

Where do I pitch Spotify's editors?

In Spotify for Artists, under Music then Upcoming. Choose the song and complete the pitch form. Anyone with Admin or Editor access on the artist team can open and edit the pitch.

Can I pitch Spotify after my song is released?

No. Spotify says a song is no longer eligible once it goes live. Editors may still add a released song from their own data, and you can still pitch independent curators.

Does a Spotify pitch guarantee a playlist?

No. Spotify states plainly that pitching does not guarantee placement. Editors might also pick a different song from your release than the one you pitched.

How long should the written pitch be?

Spotify's written field is short. Guides that have measured the form report about 500 characters. Use four or five sentences: the sound, the story, one proof, the plan.

How many songs can I pitch at once?

One. Spotify lets you pitch one song at a time, including for an EP or album. When the pitched song goes live, you can pitch another.
